'Companies can earn billions from sustainability'

According to climate data agency CDP, sustainability efforts could generate billions of euros for Dutch companies. CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) analyzed the sustainability reports of 376 large Dutch companies, the results of which were shared exclusively with Het Financieele Dagblad. These figures show that Dutch companies collectively saved or earned €27 billion in 2024 by investing in sustainability and better preparing for future climate risks. Yet, only 5% of the companies surveyed are actively pursuing policies in this area, for example, through electrification, emission reduction, or improving the efficiency of production chains. "A sustainable strategy isn't environmental activism; it's good business practice," says CEO Sherry Madera.

The €27 billion savings stem from lower costs, mitigating future financial risks, and creating new revenue streams. These risks include stricter customer sustainability requirements and rising fossil fuel prices.

CDP
calculates that failing to take action will cost a company an average of €15 million over the next three years, rising to €58 million in the long term. According to Madera, sustainable investments actually yield significant returns: large companies earn an average of €46 back for every euro invested in sustainability and resilience to environmental risks.

CDP receives sustainability data from over 24,000 companies worldwide. Some 640 financial institutions use this information in their investment decisions. Madera sees a clear trend: "We're receiving more and more comprehensive sustainability reports. In fact, companies want to know from us: what will be the next important questions for our stakeholders?"
